Since Java 1.8, tamed wolves will attack skeletons by themselves, even if the player never attacked or got attacked by them. Skeletons run away from wolves at a similar speed, causing wolves to chase them for long distances and stop following or teleporting to the player. This continues until the skeleton is killed (which usually takes a while without player intervention) or despawns; a player on low render distance may run out of range before either happens, causing the wolves to be stuck in unloaded chunks.
While it may be amusing to see a pack of wolves ganging up on a skeleton, it makes them less usable as following pets if they keep wandering off on their own, or you have to kill every skeleton you come across to prevent that.
