there are certain mobs in the game that when struck by lightning change. I think the bat should be included in this category. Now whether or not the giant bat is hostile is an interesting question, i do think we need more flying mobs to the game for both categories.
my idea is that the giant bat should be hostile based on hunger, when it hungers it will swoop down and pick up livestock mobs, villagers as well as the player, creating a unique form of attacking that no other mob has.
for a fun extra detail having the giant bat look for shade during the day and hang upside down would be a nice touch
it could also be mountable to create a bat jockey combo for skeleton mobs, adding proper ranged flying enemies unlike the dragon who still mostly attacks by slamming into the player, much like the phantom.
this would give more use for bats in minecraft aside from being an ambient mob, struck by lightning at night you could have a real problem on your hands.
part of me also would love the ability to ride them/tame them, though that would require balancing to not make it busted. possibly using them only during night and not perma-tamed if not continuously feed. not only would they stop letting you mount them, but they will as go back to attacking you and other passive mobs
