Most of the mobs' weak spots make sense: sea creatures suffocate on the shores, undead get burned by the sun etc. Thanks to this, their weak spots can be figured out by trial and eror. What I would expect following this logic, though, is that spiders (and insects) would quickly die in water. This vulnerabililty has to do with the way they breathe (with their whole bodies), as well as some other reasons. Hopefully some biologists will provide a more detailed explanation in the comments, but, basically, if you're an insect or a spider, "stay away from the water" is survival 101. Let us kill spiders with rain and water buckets -- for the sake of science, of course!
