This would be great, if you put fireflies in a lantern and maybe dye it you could have coulerd lanterns!

I love this idea and was just about to suggest it myself! They would be an excellent ambient mob for nighttime. Firefly lanterns would make some unique lighting and would bring the game to life.

they will be very small, but there will always be a swarm. at night they glow. they can be caught in a jar.

They should spawn in open fields or maybe even as a passive mob in the badlands

I wish they'd add fireflies in the next Bee + Bug Update, since well, fireflies are bugs too.

Good idea, but what if the fireflies shone and appeared at night. They would be helpful in case of a night scan. As you say, we could capture them and put them in jars to use as natural lanterns

Maybe they could drop a new item like glowing goo when killed, which can be used to make a potion of glowing.

Absolutly yes! And I think if they get added, it could be towards swamps to give that biome a cool atmosphere as the swamps are on purpose muddy and quite ugly but most importantly uninspiring to build in. It also could be a particle effect rather than a mob (because I look at them as the 1x1 pixel things like the current Nether biome particles), buuuuut I think you cannot catch them to be used.

Would be cool if they illuminate the surrounding a little bit. Just a low level lightsource as the hover/fly with dynamic lights (as I have seen Minecraft Dungeons did that outstandingly in the Soggy Swamp section)

it would cool to see them spawn in swamps. They should male and female versions. Put them in bottle is cool idea.

This is great idea, it'll be a great visual improvement and open a whole new way to do night walks/exploring, the idea of putting them into a bottle/jar to create a firefly lantern is also great (maybe being able to put them above water).

I'm surprised this suggestios has so few votes, it's a really good idea.

I was about the make the same suggestion.  Though i also thought about having them as a mob in a new dark dimension where they are one of the few sources of light.  Or perhaps as part of an End dimension update.

This is a great idea and I have a suggestion for it. When you kill them you can get an item called Glow Gel. 9 Glow Gel makes a glow block, which is a light source. You can also craft Glow Gel into a firefly lamp to catch fireflies. Most light sources in Minecraft only emit light when placed, but maybe the firefly lamp will make light while in your hand. Feed your fireflies grass every so often to keep your lamp glowing bright!

I was about to say the exact same thing! They should add nets to catch the fireflies. I think the fireflies would be pretty small so they aren’t like the bees. Every time you swing the net a durability goes away. And if you put the “Net of Fireflies” in a crafting table you get a “Glowing Essence” but you get the net back. Nine glowing essence’s make a glow block which can be dyed.

I would love to see fireflies! I feel like they could just make it so you can release them in one spot and they's stay there. then they could be used as lights when you don't have a block to place a torch or lantern on. I think they'd make nighttime look so interesting.

Maybe you'll be able to catch them in a bottle and release them just like a fish. This way they wont despawn and will give life to magical builds.

They don't need to implement dynamic lights, since fireflies only "blink" and don't give light all the time

Ooh I've thought about this before! I've always thought it would be a cool addition, especially at night in forests or caves!

Fireflies should just be glowing particles that spawn in groups in certain biomes. I do think that they should be bottled like bottling dragon breath, but that should only be used for potions or for transporting them somewhere else. Frogs could try to lick them

I really like this idea as another potential light source.

It would be great if the light emitted by a block variant of fireflies would have varied intensities, occasionally fading and occasionally glowing brighter.

I think that new caves can look great, it would be cool that you could put them in a boat and drop them in a place as a form of light

I'd love it if you could catch them in bottles. They should be pretty small, maybe the size of a baby bee, and difficult to catch. They'd be a great ambient mob, especially in creative mode where you can make a spawner.

Ok I'll try to "fix" the firefly idea, it would be a mob that would appear as particles, lige a group of particles floating around the air on some biomes like the spruce wood forest, the jungle, oak wood forest and possibly others. The particles would emit a small amount of light, if you approach them with a glass bottle, you could capture them and then have a firefly lantern, and then place it as a placeble item and it would illuminate the ambience.

This would be a good addition to the forest biome since that biome doesn't really have much going for it in terms of content.

This would really fit in, as Mojang is trying to add endangered species to Minecraft, and fireflies are endangered due to pesticides.

I absolutely agree. Especially in the jungle. It would add a really nice touch.

I don’t think you should kill them. I think you should be able to gather them into a jar, and release them at dawn to gain XP orbs. The visual similarity of the XP orbs means this just makes sense, and it would encourage players to interact peacefully with the fireflies and explore at night.

What happened with the fire fly particles from the 1.19 preview? Only as particles. Not entities at least.
