Extra Hotbar Space (and how it would be useful for map-making)

There are so many times in building where I would constantly run out of hotbar space and have to go in and out of my inventory. I always wished there was a way to either customize the amount of hotbar slots, or to just double the slots and add a new row on top of the old one. This proposed feature could also be useful for map-making, especially if you could just disable the hotbar. It would also be cool to make this a command, so map makers could change the amount of slots during gameplay via command blocks. This could also be a setting when creating a world, or just a setting in general. I feel like an inventory/hotbar update would be great to have.
