That's a great idea. Villagers need to be able to defend them selves.

    Marvelous idea.
    Mob defense needs an overhaul.
With village progression, this system would not override the current system of mob combat, and surviving the night or preventing mob spawns, but rather add a new system where it could be an entire separate adventure from the main gameplay loop, like a side quest from the dragon fight.

perhaps to abide by "one block at a time" and preventing the world drastically changing without the player, a villager could ask the player to build a house for them by marking a spot or something along these lines.

It could avoid overriding current villages by still generating normal villages, which could be upgraded as more villagers are born or brought to the area. New villages could instead be "villager outposts" and would be created by moving a villager out of the range of their current village or healing a zombie villager out of range from a village.

This feature fits into Minecraft's loose phantasy theme as an adventurous side objective with waves of undead increasing in difficulty as the outpost progresses. It even could fit into the wild update as a part of exploration or maybe have an archeology outpost mechanic similar to this where you need to protect the dig site and archeology villagers from hostile mobs.
