Using a pickaxe deals more damage to a iron golem than a sword

A sword won't do much to a solid chunk of iron, so why is it efficient in killing a iron golem? Pickaxes on the other hand can actually do something to a chunk of iron. So why isnt a pickaxe a better weapon against a iron golem? Basically, pickaxes deal more damage than a sword against iron golems.

    And a way to make this more interesting gameplay wise, is Zombies holding pickaxes, so this would make a bit of sense

    Actually, for whatever reason, axes deal more damage to iron golems than pickaxes. This makes no sense since iron golems are made of iron and not woood.
