As a first order of business to this idea, skeletons no longer burn in sunlight. Instead, they will collapse into a "bone pile", which will reanimate when night falls or if given enough shade. A player will be able to disassemble these "bone piles" to prevent the reanimation of the associated skeleton. This will not alter how skeletons would normally die through other means. A bone pile, when broken, should have the normal skeleton drop loot.
This would give a bit of differentiation from zombies when it comes to the daylight/night cycle along with making the coming night a more immediate threat if there are piles of bones lying around. As a side benefit, there will be less items dropped to the ground when the inevitable day comes to burn away the monsters that lurk.
