I think a good solution to this would be an experimental toggle option to be able choose between OpenGL and Vulkan for testing, so everyone who wants to use it can without locking anyone out of the game, like people with old/incompatible hardware.

Also development for OpenGL has ended years ago with them only operating on maintenance mode so there needs to be some kind of replacement eventually.

Also the relatively new Vulkan mod for Fabric is very promising and a good proof of concept so far.

I know this is several years later and probably have heard about it already, but there's a mod called "VulkanMod" which swaps OpenGL for Vulkan and I am happy to say it gives a huge performance boost. For me on my 2022 M2 MacBook Pro (8 Core CPU, 10 Core GPU, 8GB RAM), sodium has given me ~110FPS, which is good enough, but VulkanMod has given me ~560 FPS which is more than enough since my monitor only goes up to 240Hz while my mac display only does 60FPS. Vulkan is a lower level graphics API compared to OpenGL so it has a closer link to the hardware allowing for more versatile optimizations.

One thing people completely miss is that if Minecraft switched to Vulkan, it would completely break compatibility with ALL shaders and many graphical mods, making it unfeasible for Mojang to do. Everything would have to be remade from the ground up. Also OpenGL itself is not actually that bad, the more recent versions still hold up. Upgrading the version could enable enough improvements to be made
