The desert needs mobs. Snake mobs would be glitchy and would look weird in-game. Tortoise mobs or lizards are probably what's expected for a passive mob. But how about something completely different? A fantasy amphibian!
Basic appearance and behavior-
The giant desert toad is the size of a block. It is dark brown with a paler brown underside. There are a few spots on its skin that are green. It spawns alone. It walks around rather than hopping since toads don't hop. You can see its chin moving in and out as it breathes. It wanders around aimlessly unless at night, when they will pursue small mobs. They approach these mobs and extend a sticky tongue to eat them, leaving drops on the ground. Anything small enough even if it doesn't spawn naturally will be fair game. Baby drowned and pigmen, chickens, and basically anything smaller than a pig is eaten. There are a few mobs they ignore- baby villagers, phantoms, and baby turtles. If they eat a mob holding a weapon, they will forcefully spit the mob out and away.
Interactions with players-
Able to be leashed. Holding their favorite food of delicious chicken, you can make them follow you. When damaged it runs away quickly. The toad will not attack players.
Breeding-
Feeding a toad chicken at night will make them start croaking. Their throats puff out when they croak. This croaking attracts non-croaking toads and they will enter love mode with a random toad that approaches them. When they breed the non-croaking toad will lay a bunch of eggs on the spot, about 10. The toad swallows the eggs and then wanders in search of any nonflowing water block. It will wander as long as it takes to find water and the eggs will be safe during this time. Once it finds water (which is rare in the desert) the toad will enter the water and deposit the eggs. The eggs will float on the surface of the water and they are vulnerable during this time. They hatch as tadpoles which grow stub legs and eventually crawl out of water, instantly turning into a smaller model of a full grown toad. THEN you have to wait for the toad to mature before it can breed or drop items.
Drops-
Killing the toad drops a toad leather. Toad leather has a strong magical affinity. It can only be used to make books. When you make a book with toad leather, the level 30 enchantments available to that book will always be maximum level.
I drew a sketch on some paper. I really tried on the legs, guys. I really tried. You should have seen the digital art I made.
