    maybe rather than a creepy monster  model  it could be more villiger or similar to the player, i have a couple ideas.

    the taming and attacking mechanics would be the same but  they attack like a zombie with a pic as a weapon,

    once tamed they wouldn't be a llama/horse but another inventory and a portable lightsource

    if two meet there's a slim chance they will like each other, if not they fight to the death and you may loose all the gear you put in him but if they do like each other they will both help you 

    you find them in/near cave dens with special sleeping bags and a unique workbench or something similar, you could move these to move the spelunkers home

    like dogs and cats tell them to stop following you but rather then sitting dead still they take the fastest way back to their den

    this means you can use them to navigate home but they can never leave the underground otherwise they burn like zombies or if you take into sunlight they could run of with your stuff. 

    Mate, this is a great idea and i will be posting my own version called   "Spelunker helper/pet"  please help me get noticed and i will post some design ideas, this could be a game changer.

    Will Futter I can't seem to figure out how to reply to your comment, if that's a function on this site... But, I think what you just described sounds sort of like a lost miner. Really neat considering the cave update is just around the corner!

    For my mob, I like the idea of it looking monster-like, as well as being a quadruped (hope I spelled that right, it means four legged) to add the variety to the hostile mobs you'd see in caves! However, the idea of them burning in sunlight sounds neat, even though it's an undead trait.

    If you see this it honestly made me really happy that after a couple years someone saw my idea. Thank you!
