Many people have complained that because of illager patrols, villages tend to get killed pretty quickly. Here is my solution:
Every villager is born with an "Emerald" number, from 0 to 4. (Nitwits always have 0)
Trading with a player will increase a villager's emerald number.
When a Patrol comes by a village, the captain will demand a number of emeralds from 3 to 6.
If any villagers near him have emeralds, they will give him as much as he demands, and the patrol will pass through the village without attacking.
If no villagers near the captain have an emerald, then the patrol will attack the village. However, they will only kill 1 or 2 villagers, and then leave, so that the village is not entirely decimated.
If there is an iron golem nearby, the villagers will not give any emeralds.
