Hunger Bar Symbol

I had a new idea to improve the heads-up display by replacing the 'drumstick' as the symbol of hunger points with a more iconic food symbol, the apple.
 
In today's society, more and more people are becoming more health conscious. And what food item is the most famous symbol of healthfulness throughout human history? Answer; the red apple! No other food even comes close to being as iconic as the apple (except perhaps a stalk of wheat).
 
So I made this example of what the change might look like, beginning with the current HUD featuring the drumsticks, followed by the new HUD featuring the apples.

    Maybe apples look to similar to hearts when pixlized.

    Perhaps carrots? I agree that some people may find it a bit offensive/offputting based on their dietary preferences, so maybe there could be an option for several different indicators too.
