I like how you call the birds generic.

Yes, they should be similar to tropical fish, so that they add diversity with one simple mob as a background mob.

I think it would be nice if you could tame some variables of these birds like canaries or how people hunt with eagles and falcons. although I don't think they would do anything particularly special except sing every Minecraft moring and would probably help a lot with the very low-quality ambience going on in the game right now

That should be a completely separate update. It should be called the Aerial Update.

I think all bird should be tamable. Big birds like eagles, owls, and hawks could sit on your shoulder. If you tap on an animal such as a chicken, rabbit, or fish (something medium small), the eagle/hawk/owl could fly off your shoulder, carry them into the air, and drop them right in front of you, giving them fall damage and killing them in front of you, so you could easily collect the meat/loot.
Medium birds, such as macaws, seagulls, and toucans could collect fruit, seeds, and crops and bring them back to you.
Small birds, such as wrens, sparrows, swallows, and kingfishers could bring you fish and seeds.

Tiny birds, like hummingbirds, chickadees, and weebills could bring you seeds and honeycombs.
All birds that had been tamed by either fish, fruit, or seeds (depending on what they eat) should sit on your shoulder if given the command to.

Thanks if you take my comment into consideration! I love this idea, birds tamable or not.
