Void Phantom

Instead of taking damage from just being in the void, a sinister creature, the Void Phantom, swoops in until game over.
This makes the area more realistic and increases the potential for further exploration. You could even hear their screeches from just above the bedrock layer.

You could just make phantoms spawn naturally in the void and come out of it to enforce sleep. they would remain below the end islands in the end.
