Sit and stay seem like the same command on a functional level.
I mean the dog will continue to sit until you give it a different command, and it's not going to be scooting around on it's tail end, right?

Free roam would be nice, I always feel guilty taming a wolf or an ocelot, and dooming it to a life of dangerous adventure, mortal combat and natural hazards OR a life limited to occupying a 1 meter by 1 meter space, never to stand or leave again...

Horses at least shouldn't just start roaming the moment you get off their back.  Especially with how leads are unreliable at best.  A horse with a saddle on should maybe roam within 5 blocks of where you stopped so that they aren't standing unnaturally still, but should not decide to just take off to parts unknown.

The ability to give different commands to dogs would be amazing too.  Follow on a dog would be like what we currently have, but staying within 3 or 4 blocks of the player.  It drives me crazy when I'm just trying to get a dog inside a safe area to make it sit and I can't get it to come close enough.

Stay would be like staying but being able to choose between sitting or standing?

I strongly believe this is also a big feature to give them free roam but also that they would not react (in free roam) when you get hit!

It would change the whole aspect of having tamed animals, this counts for all the tamed animals like parrots too.

I think maybe the parrots should have it to where they can land on a fence and stay on it and then I could have my home cleaner and [self promotion removed, please don't do this on this site ~mod]

I think you could use a whistle item to make more complex commands to your pets: like sit, stand, attack, stop attacking, come here, run away, etc...

And the dog should also trace a mob using the drop of the mob.

having dogs roaming around in a house would make the atmosphere of everything just better with that feeling of having another pet thats not just sitting in one spot

having more modes would be super cool. You could make them roam around an area, and they would maybe stay within a certain radius of a block that you mark. This would make the concept of a guard dog possible in minecraft, and make the "security systems" of parrots and cats even more effective when paired with dogs. cool idea!

I feel like if you do things with dogs alot they should learn to do that (like killing zombies, to go home if hurt etc.), the process would speed up if you give it food even when it doesnt need it as a treats.

If the tamed pet is taken home they can roam a chunk or 2 area around a block that you place as a home block,

I think there should be 3 basic modes for pets: Sit, Roam, and Follow.

Sit would be exactly as it is now.

Roam would allow your pet to move freely within a radius. As for how that radius is set, I'm not sure. It could be based on where they were when you set them to Roam, or maybe based on the nearest spawn point or something, though probably something like the first one.

Follow would be a bit different from how it is now. Your pet would move around freely within a small radius around you. However, if you attach a Lead or Fishing Rod to them, they will go into complete follow mode, and won't try to roam around at all.

Pets will only teleport to you if set to Follow mode.

Just throwing my two iron nuggets in here:

One way to make managing pets a better experience would be to add something like a pet whistle. Using the whistle and right-clicking on a pet or multiple pets could open up a menu with some simple commands. This could be things like “stay”, “follow”, “roam”, or even “free” if you want to stop having a pet without, you know, murdering or abandoning it.

Maybe different kinds of pets could have different commands. Dogs could be able to patrol a certain area and attack hostile mobs. Cats could be able to hunt rabbits and fish at the edges of a water source. Parrots could have an “alarm” ability, loudly screeching when a hostile mob gets close.

There could be a pet whistle command that selects a block for the pet to stay in, so that we don’t have to do the whole pet wrangling and pushing routine to get them in the right place. Another thing that would be great would be the ability to summon a pet from anywhere in the world using the pet whistle. This would help when your pet gets lost in an unloaded chunk, or even in combat situations.

Something that also definitely needs to be added is some sort of call command. Whenever im adventuring with a pack of dogs, randomly they will find a skeleton in a cave underground somewhere and just peel off and stare at it while me and the rest of my pack keep sprinting. then i turn around a min later and I am missing a dog and have to turn around and spend 10min looking for it. there should just be an action that we can do that "calls" all pets that arent sitting to our position so its easy to regroup. this would be super useful, especially when my dogs start dancing on the edge of a ravine or lava pit, or for when we are in a battle thats getting too intense and I see they are losing health quickly. i could call them back and we can regroup before we go back in.

I think this would be a great fit to go in with the other ideas in these comments about roaming and following modes and stuff, but I think that making this some sort of action instead of an item that you have to carry around to waste an inv space would better, as inv slots become super valuable the farther your journey gets.

Also -- AI improvements are definitely necessary to all tameable pets currently. i have a fireplace in my house, its 2x2, with the front row as iron bars and the back 2 blocks have fire on them. this is built into the wall, but there is a 1block high space above the iron bars. this is my dogs and cats and parrots favorite thing to jump/fly into, and is the reason I have to open a LAN server on my single player world just so i can respawn them in creative. another example, this happens with pets and llamas for another example of an animal, when im travelling over the ocean with frost walker they always drown under frosted ice or a nearby lilly pad when there are clear paths to escape. when i say clear I mean clear like there was one lilly pad and nothing else it was just water.

I dont think i need to say anything more about this.

    Things like:

    - "avoid combat"

    - "avoid combat when under x hp"

    - "stay in the area" (walk around in a certain area but don't follow me)

    - "guard area"

Such commands for wolfs would make them so much more useful and less frustrating to deal with.

Dealing with large numbers of tame animals can be annoying. If I could just blow a whistle and have all 100 of my dogs stand up and follow me that would be great.

As well that wolves can defend the owner even if the stay seated, but not follow.

You could make patrol blocks by tapping on them when you tell them guard and they won't guard until they have a loop other dogs can connect by telling them guard and tapping on a guard block. Sit would make them sit but move after a little bit telling them stay after sit would make them stay there until told to. When you tell them roam you set a border and they will stay there but roam around. The whistle would do all of these commands to all of your dogs a at once.
