Every opinion on birch logs I've ever heard concluded either that it's plain ugly or it's only good for birch trees and no other use. The reason is the stark black on white patterning makes it very specific, and it just doesn't seem to fit other normal uses of logs, like edging pillars on a house.
The thing is, not all birch trees have such a stark pattern. My proposal is to revamp the birch log texture to resemble the white paper birch. The bark blocks could be changed to be a subtle sideways streaking on a white surface. So jungle trees would no longer be alone in having a sideways bark texture. The more subtle and interesting texture would be more able to be incorporated into builds, and white blocks are always popular.
Some examples of white paper birch bark:
They are mostly white with subtle sideways markings that could be made into a beautiful and distinctive white block.
