Snow golems do no damage, which makes sense: you can construct an army of them on day 1 if you so choose. But later game, it would be nice to make them stronger. I propose that if you shear the pumpkin from a Snow golem, and then give them a block of blue ice, now their snowballs apply Freezing to their targets, as though the target is standing in powdered snow. Each snowball applies a level of Freezing status, and it is short lived, so it takes multiple hits before the target begins to take damage. There would be no way for players to get these special freezing snowballs. These golems would wear the blue ice block as a helmet, but it would provide no protection and could not drop as an item.
This would make Snow golems more dangerous, but not immediately dangerous: they need a sustained attack or a group of them attacking a target to actually do damage.
So this is something to motivate players towards the mid game, adding value to silk touch, but not making it massively overpowered: the golems are just as fragile as before, they just now would actually slowly do damage by way of the Freezing status effect.
You could make it so that leather boots make mobs immune to this, like to powdered snow, which would have the funny effect that the "low danger" mobs with low quality leather armour might be immune, but the "high danger" mobs with higher tier gold, iron, diamon armour become vulnerable again.
So there is still risk vs reward, but the players get to have some more fun allies.
