Here is how you can regen chunks as it stands:

    • find an area you want to reload, set your render to about as many chunks as you want to delete.
    • save, back out, edit, open world folder,
    • look for regions folder, delete what's inside it,
    • reinter Minecraft, click save, reenter your world.

    Boom. New updated installed.

Make sure - and I absolutely cannot emphasize this enough - you are not anywhere near anything you want to keep!!!!! Check that render distance, check what's loaded. Keep your files in the recycle bin and be prepared to cycle through them to recover anything lost. Also, I believe spawn is always in the region files? Because it's always loaded? Some technical player knows that answer.

If Mojang added anything, I think it should be a tool on their website where you can drop in your region files and get the map view of said chunk, similar to MC Selector, so that you have an easier time not deleting things you want to keep. But between some judicious study of chunk-base seed map and application of render distance you can get this pretty easy.

    Hope this helps!
