There was a change in versions 25w04a-1.21.5 which changed the hitbox from being a "full block", or the entire space of the block the portal takes up, to the space that the portal takes up, or about 4 pixels. This change was unnecessary and needs to be reverted in future patches.
Background:
MC-101556 was a bug that was first reported in 2016. The bug report can be seen here: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC/issues/MC-101556. All that was given in the description was that the range is too large, equivalent to a complete block. It was then expanded on that this was an issue with linking of portals, something that was a different issue entirely.
Issues:
This bug fix unintentionally breaks a number of technical builds which previously leveraged the nether portal.
- Chunkloaders that dispensed minecarts or boats into the nether portal now break due to this change.
- Items that were teleported by being pushed into the portal with pistons no longer teleport.
- Projectiles shot at the portal no longer get teleported.
- Many portal based farms now break since entities must now collide with the portal hitbox rather than the block.
Overall, this bug fix has only done harm to the community, and reverting this change, or just enabling entities to teleport by being in the block, would be a welcome change to the technical Minecraft community. Please vote and share this with others so this oversight becomes visible to the devs.
