I’m excited for the future of Minecraft, with the way Mojang is moving forward with the mob variants. I would like to see them eventually add the option for variations to all mobs, but before that time comes I think there needs to be a restructure of the directories within data packs. For data packs I think the most effective and efficient solution would be arranging it like so:
📁 data
📁 name space
📁 entity variants
📁 cow
📄 example cow
Additionally, there should be an option for custom entity models, not just the arbitrary "normal" and "cold" that there currently is as of 25w06a.
This means that resource packs would need an “entity” folder within the “models” and each mob would have a subfolder within that “entity” directory. The existing texture directory is already suitable, I’ve just included it to demonstrate an example pack. For example:
📁 assets
📁 name space
📁 textures
📁 entity
📁 cow
📄 custom1
📁 models
📁 entity
📁 cow
📄 custom1
