For the longest time ive been wondering why the water in Minecraft feels so incredibly fake and i think ive finally figured out one of the major details thats prevent it from seeming like its actually water.
Part of real life thanks to refraction, scattering and reflection when light hits water theres about a 38 degree angle in where light passes through water anything higher and it gets reflected out of the water. This effect is called snells window.
This visually manifests as water being clear above you for a large cone shape radius based on distance from the surface with everything else being impossible to see through.
