The grass texture peeking out from full leaf litter looks strange. It looks like the leaves were carefully placed so that they don't overlap. This prevents us from having true leaf piles.
This could be tweaked by making the grass texture render browner beneath 4 leaf litter - somewhere between the existing grass texture and podzol or coarse dirt. Alternatively, grass could render with a couple overlapping leaves, adding to the illusion of a pile because the grass texture is physically below the leaf litter texture.
A similar mechanism already exists to make grass beneath snow layers render white, which has been successful in making snowy biomes look more realistic without adding a new block.
