Note: this is not a request for custom entity models. I'm sure that's been suggested already. This suggestion should be less drastic while still having many positive uses.
With the addition of multiple pig models, and last year's additions to resource pack control over equipment and item models, I think certain entities ought to be next.
My proposed solution is a folder that can have limited model definitions just like the equipment models. This would apply to mobs with variants that have slightly different models or model parts, such as the cows, skeletons, or zombies. Like equipment models, the layers you can choose from for each mob are completely preset and don't allow for custom models to be added. I think this is an important step in customizability.
This drop is a great opportunity for this because if there are two models for the newly updated pig, this would allow creators to choose between them without also having to use a data pack. It would also have other great uses. For example, the skeleton could get an overlay like the stray, or because you get to set textures applied to the models, you could change what block model renders for the mooshroom (e.g., setting it to be a buttercup without changing the mushroom texture)
We're grateful for the recent resource pack expansions so far, so please consider continuing this in the next drop. It goes well with what's been done so far in current snapshots.
