Spaces between two characters in a custom Font

With the current version of Minecraft, the community can create their own fonts / fonts-packs and load them into the game. Unfortunately it isn’t possible to apply a background color behind characters. For example, if you try to give black characters a yellow background, there’s a small space between them. And if you use a regular space (“ ”), you can’t apply a background color to it at all, only a space width.

It would be a great addition — especially for chat-based servers — to have a feature that allows fully custom backgrounds for characters via fonts, without leaving those little gaps where no color can be applied.
