I believe the creaking should have some kind of armor piercing to make him more terrifying. This should include netherite armor. Have him hit a player with a total of 1/3 of their health being damaged. This can ramp up his fear factor for more experienced players and newer players as well. If he only hits for a measly 1.5 hearts in total it really makes him less scary. 3 hits and you're out should be how he works, so players aren't immediately punished or leading to aggravating experiences. This will keep his intimidation factor prevalent and not make him annoying. Since he only spawns at night players can avoid him if they so choose if they want anything else from the forest. If he is a substantial threat this will encourge team work and critical thinking to work around him. (It would be terrifying if he could break down wooden doors as well.) Over all I think he needs something more oninous to him than just scary noises, make him strong and sneaky which can surprise the player. I also wouldn't mind 1/4 as well, so it'll be 4 strikes and you're out.
