I think unique loot drops for the creaking are necessary. This should give players a desire to hunt creaking.
Something should be done to make creaking have a purpose to hunt down, before the Winter Drop is released. If not this, then something else.
Pale Bark:
Pale bark could be a unique item that is dropped in amounts of 1 to 4. The pale bark should have a use of being smelted into charcoal. Pale bark could also be used in reinforced leather armor, giving more durability and protection status on leather armor.
Pale bark should also be used in Attentive potions that relieve the effects of insomnia for 5 to 7 in-game days.
Finally pale bark could be used as decoration when placed on the ground, this block could also speed the growth of grass through its unknown properties.
Pale Lilly:
Pale lillies are only dropped by creaking if they are sheared when a creaking is blooming. The pale lilly should be used in potions of blindness, and can be fed to your tamed pets to give them a temporary effect that amplifies all positive effects, applies regeneration, and reduces negative effect duration.
Pale lillies could also be placed on pale moss emitting a light level of 4 or 5.
Summary: These are just a couple of ideas that could be implemented, creaking hearts I believe could also serve as the main item gained from creaking, but they need to have an implemented use beyond summoning creaking.
I went for the idea of items that present status effects, while still having functionality beyond that.
