despite wolf armor, thier "durability" was never issue for me, it was rather how and why they died..
just simply make wolves not jump intentionally from cliffs and into lava, especially if you gto 2+ wolves, they fall to death all the time
making wolves bit faster, at least for moment, to have small charge, so they can actually catch up fleeing skeletons or bunnies or such mobs, this should have then some cooldown before they can charge again
healing wolves by meat but breeding them by bones, or heal them with rotten flesh still but breed them only by cooked meats, so breeding wolf army isnt so primitively easy (no wolf life has value if you can get bunch of them on go with killing mere zombies)
adding something as "hellhound" (name it differently) to nether, variant that could be immune or resistant to lava, taming it same as normal wolves, to balance this resistence, maybe it can be slower than normal wolves, it could spawn in warped and crimson forests, maybe could be asigned to some piglins (as if they were tamed by them), so they acompany them and assist in battle, even against players
wolf whistle or modified goat horn to command wolves to degree, such as ordering attack on mobs without need to punch those or be punched by those, or stopping them attack things you hit accidentally or stop chasing that one skepeton far away, making them sit/stand in area or such
