Minecraft java snapshot 24w33a gave us better rail physics and faster minecart max speeds through a game rule. Here's how I feel these changes should be brought into the real game.
- Normal rails should stay simple and remain the same.
- Powered rails should be entirely reworked. Upon passing over one your minecart should speed up by the current max speed of 8b/s. Upon removing a redstone signal, instead of the usual behaviour of stopping the minecart, the powered rail would instead maintain it's current speed.
- Adding a new rail (should utilise copper so for the sake of this I will refer to it as a copper rail) - copper rail should function unpowered, the same as my suggested improvement for unpowered powered rail maintaining the speed built up by your powered rails, allowing for expansive rail networks that ignore wind resistance and deceleration normal rails would otherwise feel. Upon being powered, copper rails would inhabit the old behaviour of unpowered powered rail and brake the minecart to zero speed however unlike old powered rails, copper rails would renember the speed the minecart arrived at and upon being depowered would accelerate the minecart back to it's original vector sending it automatically on its way.
- Detector rails and activator rails should stay simple and remain the same.
