I think 24w33a’s Minecart Experiment is a step in the right direction (love the ability to make ramps) but making minecart speed only a function of gamerule is strange.
To allow variable and controllable minecart speed within one world, powered rails should be made out of copper instead of gold. The rails would then oxidize, and the most oxidized version would accelerate minecarts to their old speed while unoxidized variants would allow the minecarts to reach higher speeds than normal.
This would allow existing contraptions to maintain their mechanisms by using oxidized rails, make minecarts more viable and copper more useful, and would give players more freedom for tinkering.
