Players can transit open doorways near closed trapdoor, villagers can't

If I put a closed trapdoor on the floor on either side of an open two-block high doorway, players can go through. Villagers get stuck. They are apparently too tall to fit through the two block open space with the closed trapdoor above the ground piece.

I would expect that villagers and players could transit similar spaces if the door is open.
