Deer have SO many cool opportunities with them!
Attract them with salt/salt licks.
Spooked as easily as rabbit except while crouching and outside a certain block radius like warden, becomes alert when the player is close to that radius. Forces the use of a ranged weapon.
Once hit they jump and run away, and once killed they don't die immediately, but after they travel a certain number of blocks at an increased speed for the player to track.
Eats salt, and rubs antlers against a tree to naturally strip the bark rather than having to use an axe. Stripped bark causes the tree to lose leaves gradually (add dead trees).
Drops venison, antlers, and deer hide. Attacked by wolves.
White-spotted Bambi fawns, deer travel in herds of 1-4. Variance in genes for size of antlers. Bred with salt.
I've been dying for deer to get added to forests for a while, impala to savannahs, or caribou to tundras. Most of the mechanics already exist with horses. Adding some in depth hunting mechanics to the game would be so, so cool and I personally think it's overdue.
Rabbits are the best mob to hunt because it's hard to kill without a ranged weapon, and their spook mechanics are already in there to make it easy to develop. I think having antlers function as bones would be nice since it's from a passive mob.
Salt could be added to the Desert (rare salt-lake sub-biome)? They could add salt water, which would remove potion effects when drank. Salting meat could be an alternative to cooking it.
