Minecraft Multiplayer has always been about the custom experiences carefully created by developers and artists who wanted to create unique gameplay.
Two elements of the game have been left out of this creation process though: Armor and Blocks. The addition of displays was a great way to customize parts of the game in ways that were already possible with armor stand poses and custom names. Despite these customization changes, it is still not possible to customize armor or blocks without overwriting existing content.
CustomModelData could easily allow for the customization of the armor with changes to how armor is rendered currently. In addition, blocks could receive an update allowing for new blocks given a change to how the game normally handles blocks.
If a simpler solution is needed then simply having a block with several extra blockstates would also allow for the needed block additions.
