The old piston sounds are classic, and lot's of people like them. However, they're also extremely loud and obnoxious. So I can absolutely see why they need to get silenced.
People are suggesting wax, which might be fine, but I've got a better idea.
It's canonical that Wool makes things quiet in Minecraft. That's how Sculk sensors work.
So, craft a piston with a wool block, and it'll make dampened or muffled pistons, which use the new sound, or maybe something more appropriate to sliding metal against cloth.
You can add slime to make them sticky, before or after the wool, whatever, that should work the same way as it always has.
Then if you want to remove the silencing effect, hit them with shears, and you get a string back.
Which means it's ALSO a way to convert wool into string! Very useful if you have sheep farm but not a spider farm. Good for playing on Peaceful and skyblock.
