Right now, using llamas with chests is not particularly useful. Even with maximum strength, the storage capacity of llamas is really small and not worth the hassle of working with the mobs in most cases. In addition, breeding higher strength llamas is time consuming and not worth the time investment for the small amount of mobile storage per llama.
Llamas could become quite useful if their storage capacity was buffed. Llamas being mobs that are not easy to control is already enough of a downside to using them that I don't see the purpose of them having such tiny capacity.
They could also become useful for automation if they were allowed to interact with hoppers and droppers similar to storage minecarts and boats with chests. If they were reworked in a way that made storage automation more accessible for people inexperienced with redstone, that would be neat but would also likely be a major design challenge.
