This would be a very big change to minecraft, so it probably won't be added.
How this would work is that when you are making a world, you can change the version of minecraft that the world will be in in the settings (ex. 1.14). This means that the "installations" could be greatly reduced in the minecraft launcher. Maybe that could be replaced with folders that can hold worlds in them (like if you are sharing a device - like a computer - with other people).
This was just an idea I had and I thought it would be a useful addition, but I understand that it might present a lot of bugs and make it so it is harder to get custom installations (ex. with mods / plug-ins).
