Minecraft can feel lonely sometimes, even with pets. The idea is to have a villager as a follower in your travels, like in Skyrim where you have followers. It completely changes the feeling of the game. It could be a wandering trader, instead of a villager, since they already travel the world in the lore. There could be an option for them to ride a lama or a camel with you. Their usefulness would be to keep inventory for you, to sell food or other useful items, to warn if danger approaches, and maybe, even have a little scripted conversation once in a while. If you have a trader follower, you could also get a buff in villager trading, better prices, secret items, etc, thanks to the trader's networking and dealing talents. They could unlock some world mapping knowledge, since they travel so much, and inform you about important structures or biomes. If you also have a pet and need to do something dangerous, they could babysit the pet and upon calling them bring them to you. Rowing a boat together should make it go faster.
There could also be some obstacles. Like having to sleep every night and giving them a bed as well otherwise they become slower and tired, or making sure to feed them often. They can't fight, but can provide you with potions or golden apples when needed.
Those are just some thing I can come up on top of my head. I'm sure there are so many other things that can work within the minecraft lore.
