As we all know, the new mace currently cannot be enchanted by any means in the current snapshot. As it has cloned stats from the diamond sword, simply adding the same enchants as a sword would likely not be ideal, as Mojang likely wants to differentiate it from the other weapons as they did with the trident. I propose that a way to make it viable in scenarios outside of attacks while falling would be to focus its enchantments on making it a possible side grade to a wide variety of weapons, mostly facilitated by a new enchantment: Heft.
Heft would be an enchantment that affects both the Attack Damage and Attack Speed attributes, up to a maximum of 5 levels. With each level of heft added to the mace, both the Attack Damage and Attack Speed attributes would increment, hitting harder and slower with each stage, until the stats resemble a Sharpness 5 diamond axe. A possible set of 5 enchantment levels could be as follows, D stands for damage and S stands for speed (higher is faster in Minecraft):
- Heft 0: 7D 1.6S
- Heft 1: 8D 1.5S
- Heft 2: 9D 1.4S
- Heft 3: 10D 1.3S
- Heft 4: 11D 1.2S
- Heft 5: 12D 1.1S
The mace could get these existing enchantments as well:
- Unbreaking
- Smite
- Bane of Arthropods
- Mending
- Curse of Vanishing
- Knockback (seems fitting for maces)
This setup allows the mace to be a thematically fitting sidegrade for unenchanted swords, smite/bane specialty swords, and sharpness battle axes, promoting weapon variety throughout the player's progression. I hope you consider something like this.
