Transparency and a colour tint would be relatively straightforward to add, and would vastly expand the possibilities for data packs and map makers to create effects and help players interact with the world.
Some ideas that come to mind (but I'm sure there are more creative ideas out there!):
* Tutorials that show 50% transparent blocks to help players build something
* Highlight blocks in the world with different colours by overlaying a tinted block display, such as red for incorrect or green for correct
* Better allowing block displays for grass/leaves to render better with the surrounding biome
* Loading/unloading effects by fading transparency in or out
* Complex layered block effects by overlaying transparent blocks on opaque ones
