Minecraft cats have 11 variants. Wolves/dogs have one. Dogs are long past due an update separating them from wolves and adding in some variants. My suggestion is to take one dog from each major group (ie Herding, Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting, Sporting, and Working) and put each in a different biome and give them each different jobs. For example:
Herding Group Dog Variant: Border Collie. Function: Herds player's sheep within certain area and keeps hostile mobs away from the sheep. Also could round up sheep if player gives it command to (maybe with a whistle or goat horn).
Hound Group Dog Variant: Beagle. Function: Scenting mobs. You give the Beagle a mob drop item (rotten flesh, spider eye, bone, etc.) and it will lead you to the nearest living mob with the corresponding drop.
Toy Group Dog Variant: Yorkie. Function: Alerting player to approaching hostile mobs with shrill barking. This can be useful in instances where the player has their back turned while mining/building and is vulnerable to hostile mob attack.
Non-Sporting Group Dog Variant: Boston Terrier. Function: Retrieving mob drops from entities the player kills (like a big game of fetch). This could be especially useful for raids.
Working Group Dog Variant: Siberian Husky or Saint Bernard. Function: Pulling players in sleds or carrying supplies in snowy biomes.
These are five variants and each unique in their abilities. If you want Mojang to implement something like this, please vote for this idea. Long live the dogs!
