When the Sniffer was announced as a mob vote canditate, I and many others voted for it because it seemed interesting and unique. It was in a hope that gradually, more lore would be phased into the game via this mob. I can't begin to think of the Ancient history of Minecraft because there is such a large and empty canvas to work on. I have wanted to explore this period of time more, with more ancient plants, mobs, ruins & tracks of the old builders/former people of the world.
With this in mind i think that an "ANCIENT UPDATE" or something like that, would be extremely fitting. It would have a clear and precise goal, unlike the past few updates, and serve as a coherent update, in the same scale, if not bigger, than the Nether Update. The lack of vision in latest few updates, have begun to backfire on Mojang with the negative comments. To implement a new update, in the same quality and with the same love that the Nether Update had, would simply be thrilling and exiting. (As far as i can tell) The game Minecraft Legends, features extinct animals that could easily fit into Minecraft.
My ideas:
Add more ways to find ancient mobs, sherds, ruins, plants, tools and in general, evidence of a former eco system teaming with life and people.
Add a portal to the world before (New Dimension) where the player can experience this old world in it's glory. Or leave it in mystery.
Adding the lost mob votes mobs as extinct mobs would also be a fantastic way to shut down the mob vote for good.
