Now, I realise that vaults should not be unbreakable. And I agree that being a jerk shouldn't be totally disallowed. However, it'd be better for everyone if it was more challenging due to it being more engaging for griefers and better for explorers who are less likely to find empty chambers due to this deterrent.
The Idea:
A great punishment for trying to break vaults could be the spawning of hostile mobs. Perhaps when a vault is broken, instead of disappearing, it turns into a 'broken vault' state and spawns a bunch of mobs (that drop nothing). You'd then have to break the broken vault for it to actually disappear. There could also be some neat screeching and mob sounds when you're close to turning the vault into a broken one in the mining animation.
This way, people who want to sabotage others have to contend with more hardship instead of it being too easy, which is more fun anyway.
