The new vault block, recently announced at Minecraft Monthly, is useful for multiplayer exploration, but is nothing more than a loot chest with extra steps. It should behave like the trial spawners do, in which it can be opened once with a Trial Key every thirty minutes or so, allowing the trial chamber to be explored multiple times.
It needs unique loot too. There's only so many times you can give out enchanted iron and diamond armor before it becomes incredibly mundane. A set of unique enchantments that would only be preapplied to the gear and not given in book form would make it less pointless to have gathered many pieces of armor or tools from structures and allow more variety.
I feel like the chambers could be bigger and more various too. Another use for the Trial Key could be a Trial Door, which would use a similar texture to the spawner and vault and would have a dead end behind it, but generate new rooms when opened with a trial key. I made another suggestion regarding additional trial structures such as a Trial Temple and Tower, which would make 1.21 feel more complete.
