Without outside knowledge, Minecraft is impossible to beat. I also think that the new recipie book should be more progressive so players need to discover recipies scattered through the world or discover them themselves to encourage exploring, at least for survival. These recipies once discovered would be permanently know. New players would be provided a book informing them of recipie books, and game basicslike movement and the concept of crafting, mining, mobs, etc (it would be automatically enabled in setting and would be like the locator maps). To fix this structures could include informative books that can teach a player about aspects of the game, blocks, and inform the player about important milestones in progression. These books may also just have pictures displaying crafting recipes. For villages these books could occur on lecturns, in chests, or in chiseled bookshelves that would replace regular bookshelves in minecraft. Villages by Ocean biomes could have lecturns on ocean monuments, deserts for desert temples, etc. In strongholds all bookshelves would be replaced by chiseled bookshelves that could be empty, contain books on crafting, or even contain enchanted books (empty book cases would be more likely). I would also include a lecturn in front of the portal with a picture book showing how to light it. These would increase the interest in strongholds and make them more worthwhile to explore. This could also happen with ruined portals to show how to enter the nether.
