Phantoms are a widely hated mob. Thats no surprise. Phantoms are flying enemies that spawn and swoop in to attack the player after they haven't slept in a bed for a few days.
The main issue people have with them is how they are completely unavoidable and difficult to hit, and unless you have a bed on you at all times, good luck being able to do a long-term building project in one go uninterrupted regardless of how much you light up your world!
My solution for this problem is to make phantoms instead of attacking you directly, vulture above you until they detect mobs nearby and then "haunt" those mobs, making them more powerful as a support class enemy.
Phantoms will stay relatively close to the heads of enemies while they haunt them, so you can easily snipe them with a bow, and they can make combat much more difficult at night which if you're late game gives more of a challenge, almost like an ultra-hard mode for those who don't sleep and give a lot more nuance to fighting common overworld enemies!
This would not only make phantoms still punish you for not sleeping, but also make them not as annoying. You can also completely avoid phantoms if you light up the world enough so those enemies don't spawn in the first place.
