Why is this change necessary?
With the upcoming exclusive trades for Jungle and Swamp Villagers, players are more incentivized than ever to create their own Villages.
There are two options for bringing Villagers into an empty village; curing Zombie Villagers or transporting a Villager via boat or minecart. The second option is very cumbersome and very dehumanizing, essentially kidnapping. Therefore the option needs to exist to have Villagers follow the player willingly.
Why this change is internally consistent:
Villagers are "interested in trading and not much else", yet following the player should fit that philosophy.
- The Wandering Trader shows that some Villagers are willing to move around for commerce reasons.
- The new Cartographer changes demonstrate that Villagers are interested in other Villager settlements.
- Villagers have a reputation-based economy, they trust the player to lead them to profit.
How this could be implemented:
Villagers don't talk to players. Thus, an item is needed to communicate intention. For this I propose the Villager Guidebook, obtained via Librarians or Stronghold/Woodland Mansion Libraries.
This item works as follows:
- Use on Villager: Villager enters a "following" state if at or above Journeyman level. Use again to cancel "following" state. Lower level will shake head.
- Use on saddled mob: Following villagers will mount mob and then follow player. Use again to dismount.
- Use on vehicle: Following villagers will enter the boat backseat or the minecart.
