Construction applications for a lead

I dream of being able to connect a rope in Minecraft from fence to fence, but also to other slim blocks like iron bars, lightning rods, walls, and maybe even end rods. I'm confident it would diversify many constructions. My idea for this is that while holding the rope and clicking on a fence (or any other aforementioned block), the rope would tie around it. If we had only one rope in the inventory and moved too far away, it would break. However, if we had multiple ropes, instead of breaking, the rope would extend with greater distance from the starting point.
