Villagers should get a second update/ expansion to further integrate them into a players progression through the game. Also having villages moving around ones base/ settlement carrying out assignments/ tasks would add a greater feel of life. Players should be able to upgrade existing villager types (once they reach max trade lvl for example) to carry out tasks such as mining/ logging, item sorting, construction (via pre loaded designs or copying an existing building), logistics (hauling items) etc. These are basic tasks that exist within minecraft but get tedious and repetitive after awhile. I don’t think any of the above would be game breaking or change the feel/ lore of the experience. Instead it would add a sense of community, automation and advancement without compromising the “simplicity” that minecraft has always carried.
Mining - via coordinates (or other) you can tell a villager where to mine to or an area to mine out. Villagers could also be set to explore or target specific resources. Once full they would travel back to “home” to place all there gathered resources in a chest (for another villager type to sort and smelt items) or be able to smelt and sort items themselves. A more advanced idea is for them to be able to build underground outposts with chests, smelters etc.
Sorting/hauling- using item frames players can designate what chests a villager should sort items into. Players can designate individual chests or all chests within an area to be sorted.
Etc.
