There is no way to control where items are allowed to go, items coming in from multiple hoppers will fill in whatever space is empty once a slot gets filled up to 64. This works fine with recipes that only use one ingredient (such as shears or armor), however most crafting recipes won't work after a while due to the crafter not being able to recognize where items should or should not go. For example: When trying to use the crafter to craft an item like a dispenser, there is the chance that once the other slots get filled up, a hopper will try to take up the spot of the bow due to it being the next available slot.
There should be some sort of "lock" mechanic that works in a similar way to voiding out a slot in the current snapshots, it could work by the player placing an ingredient in one slot and locking with a button press that would only allow that specific type of item to fill that slot. Alternatively, a crafting recipe menu (similar to the crafting guidebook in the player inventory) could show up to the side of the crafter UI that will allow the player to select a recipe to lock the crafter to, this makes it so that the crafter will only accept items that are part of the recipe and prevents items from going into the wrong slots.
The advantage of this change would allow for less hoppers that would need to be used and will also make the crafter more accessible for those that are trying to craft recipes that require more than two ingredients.
