That would be so useful, but I think there should be an iron grate too, and if lava or arrows could pass through it as well it would be great for making so many things.

I don't know if it would be so easy to program a water permeable block like that. But it should definitely be able to be waterlogged, with water flowing out from every side, like a waterlogged top slab.

Agreed, being able to make a walkway through a waterfall without the water being displaced and flowing onto the other grates would look very nice. I would like other blocks to be flowing waterloggable but copper grates is a good start.

The comparator could read what kind of items are passing through the Grate, perhaps mainly by if it's stackable to 1, 16, or 64, is flowing lava versus flowing water, etc

And for the true level of control, maybe the more oxidized the Grate is, the slower items must go to pass through it.

I think it would be cool if projectiles could be shot through the grates too, such as arrows or wind charges.

I know that smoke goes through it, so you can make a smoke wall that you can walk through.

I have a similar idea where you can place a copper grate in a bubble column and the bubbles still pass through. So, if you hook it up to a redstone contraption, you could make an elevator system where you can't pass through it, but the bubble column can without deleting the water source block.

My favorite mod, Better than Adventure, does something almost exactly like this. It's awesome and should be added

Can't be too hard, right? They already have one water-permeable block: AIR.
Items are entities so I am assuming they mean it shouldn't be permeable to mobs but should be permeable to items. Definitely should also work for bubble columns and water, but I don't know about items. Sure it might have some niche uses but it wouldn't really make sense for like, a sword or block to pass through the grate.
